What is Mandarin?
Many people speak of 'Chinese' as a language, but there is no such thing. There are many languages spoken in China and Taiwan, including Cantonese, Hakka, and Wu, and collectively they might be known as 'Chinese' but in fact they are mutually unintelligible languages that just happen to be spoken in a particular region.
Mandarin is the official language of China, where it is referred to as pǔ tōng huà - "the common language." Mandarin is also the official language of Taiwan, where it is called guóyǔ - "the national language."
There are many variations of Mandarin. Pǔ tōng huà is based on the Beijing dialect, which is spoken in Beijing and the Beijing region. Almost every city in China has its own variation on standard Mandarin, and each of these could qualify as a Mandarin dialect.
